On December 26, Zhang and Feng were taken by police to the scene of the crime. Zhang, escorted by officers and cuffed, was questioned outside the construction site next to the victim’s home. Feng arrived shortly after, leading police to the construction site where he pointed out a gap between a tarpaulin and wall, believed to be the entry point used by Zhang to climb into the victim’s property. Feng reportedly kept his head down during the visit.
The police investigation led to the identification of Zhang and Feng after reviewing security footage. The duo was arrested on December 18 at a hotel in Joo Chiat, and the police recovered stolen items such as jewelry, a branded pouch worth around $5,000, and about $3,570 in cash. Both the Greenleaf View house and another property in Buona Vista, which they are suspected of burglarizing on December 18, did not have burglar alarms, although the Greenleaf View house had security cameras that aided the investigation.
Zhang and Feng are connected to other housebreakings in Singapore, particularly one in the Zehnder Road area, and possibly linked to a larger syndicate involved in stealing millions from landed properties in the Bukit Timah and Rail Corridor areas earlier in 2024. Police have not ruled out the possibility of Zhang and Feng’s involvement with these criminal syndicates. They face charges of housebreaking and theft, with Zhang and Feng scheduled for further court appearances on December 27.
In the neighborhood where the crime occurred, residents expressed concern for their safety. One resident, a domestic helper, mentioned increased police patrols and security measures like CCTV cameras. Another resident, a man in his 70s, stated that he felt safe since he was always home and his property had a burglar alarm.
Those found guilty of housebreaking for theft in Singapore could face up to 10 years in prison and fines.
